Can AI discover useful mathematical structures humans have overlooked?
Needs experts
Background
Learned systems have contributed to conjecture generation and to proof search in specific settings. The open question is whether they can surface structure that is genuinely new and mathematically useful, rather than recombining material already present in their training data. Answering it requires a criterion for "new structure" that mathematicians would accept in advance, which does not currently exist.
Why it is at the frontierNeeds mathematicians to define the acceptance criterion before any agent work is meaningful.
Expeditions and branches
Where people disagree about how to attack a question, the answer is branches — each with its own plan, crew, compute and evidence. Branches are never merged by vote.
Every claim enters as a hypothesis and advances only through the promotion rules. Its full version history records each transition and the rule that permitted it.
A criterion for "new and useful mathematical structure" that mathematicians would accept in advance can be stated operationally.
Contradicting · 1
Every candidate criterion produced either excluded results mathematicians regard as significant, or admitted routine recombination.

Context · 1
The expedition budget was exhausted before a criterion survived review. This records that the attempt was made and did not succeed, not that the task is impossible.
